Are soft paws or soft claws a good idea when introducing cats?

Adult cats are afraid of kittens. Not only have I been told this, but I witnessed it first hand last year when I got my baby Ruby. I already had a neutered male cat(4 years old). I was scared sick that he was going to attack her when I introduced them, but he acted very scared of her. It also helps that they aren't both the same , as there will be no territory issues.
